Baptism Baptism is a joyous occasion in our Village Church family. Baptism is a public expression of an inner conversion to believe in Jesus. It is through the baptism service that a person joins our church, and the worldwide body of believers. Seventh-day Adventists baptize by immersion into water. Baptism is given to those who make an informed decision to become a life-long disciple of Jesus. Those who have been baptized by immersion into another faith group, but wish to become a Village member may join the church through a public Profession of Faith. Child Dedication During this short ceremony the Pastor will ask the parents to answer in the affirmative several questions which demonstrate a public commitment to bring the child up in the ways of God, and request God's continual blessing upon the child. The church family too makes a commitment to pray for and befriend the parents and child. The ceremony closes with a prayer of dedication by the Pastor. The Lord's Supper Approximately four times a year we celebrate the Lord's Supper, also called Communion. During this service we take time to consider the symbols of Jesus' death. The bread represents the Lord's broken body. The grape juice symbolizes His spilled blood. His death represents the punishment we deserve. The Anointing Service Following the counsel of James 5:14-20 there are times when sickness in a believer calls for a special time of prayer. James says that the elders should be called together with the hurting individual for anointing. Anointing literally means to pour oil. In the Scriptures it was by this act that an individual submitted themselves to the service and will of God – whatever the outcome. The anointing service is a time to commit oneself to the will of God. James uses the example of Elijah. Elijah submitted himself to the service and will of God. In this commitment he prayed for the rain to stop – and it did for 3.5 years. There is power in committed service. |
