Dr. Geraldine Isabel (Hale) Grout of
South Lancaster, MA, passed away on Thursday February 21, 2008, in the Clinton,
MA Hospital. She was 84. Geraldine was affectionately known within her family as
“Jay.” She was the wife of JOHN M. GROUT for 50 years. They both have very
actively served the South Lancaster Village Church of Seventh-day Adventists as
loving and loyal members—where she was the Church Historian and the founder of
the Adventist Heritage Center.
Dr. Grout was born to Mr. and Mrs. Ashley G. Hale of West Groton, MA on June 16,
1923. Her niece, Frieda says, “Auntie Jay was a graduate of Groton High School
in 1941. She received her Masters of Education from Boston University in 1950
and her PhD in Business Education from the University of Indiana in 1961.”
Geraldine was the nursing home administrator of the Hale Convalescent and
Nursing Home in West Groton, MA. Dr. Grout served in all levels of Adventist
education; she taught Secretarial Science and was Dean of Women at the Atlantic
Union College in South Lancaster, MA, and finished her long career of service to
her Church as the Editor of the Atlantic Union Gleaner for 22 years.
Dr. Grout was a member of the American Academy of Medical Administrators—in the
United States, and also in Canada. During a solemn ceremony at a convocation in
Houston, TX, the Board of Directors elected her to become a member of the
Administrator’s Institute and presented the credentials to her.
“Auntie Jay” or “Jay” was known for her devotion to her family and friends—to
have a generous heart. She will be greatly missed by friends and family,
including her nieces and nephews.
